The season 3 finale of The Mentalist really delivered one of the best season finales this summer. That final scene is thrilling and spectacular. But some viewers still have doubts. Was that really Red John?

To conclude the final 2010-2011 season of The Mentalist, Patrick Jane confronted the man who murdered his family (played eerily well, in an unexpected cameo, by Bradley Whitford) and shot Red John dead in front of multiple witnesses.

In his first interview since the finale, The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller told Entertainment Weekly that all may not have been what it appeared in that final few moments.

"The question remains: Was that Red John?" Heller asks. "The viewer is supposed to be convinced. Patrick Jane is certain it’s Red John. Some people are not so certain. Thing is, Red John is a master of the mind game. If Red John wanted to die, maybe this is how he wanted to die. Or maybe he just wants Jane to think he’s dead."

In my personal opinion that was not Red John. Remember the guy is sneaky and genius, and that's not the best way to eliminate him. Any thoughts?

NOT Red John - I guess it could be, but if that was Red John, then Bertram must also be involved. There would have been no reason for RJ to be at the mall if Bertram was not involved. There wasn't any shown conversation between O'Laughlin and Bertram, which would have lead O'Laughlin/RJ to believe that Hightower would have been at the mall that day. Seems suspicious to me.

He can't be dead or else the ratings just died with him. TV people aren't stupid, well they aren't that stupid... Or at least not all of them are that stupid. Granted there are exceptions like the people at FOX who cancelled both Family Guy and Futurama, but mostly they aren't that stupid. Bruno Heller isn't that stupid....

Is Red John just one person?

Remember in the first Saw movie someone was extorted to do many things that made him look like the Jigsaw killer, but was in fact just another victim.

In my opinion they either need to kill Red John or quit wasting my time - I am tired of the whole series which I really enjoyed but the writers of this program are bringing it to point where it jumped the shark last season and I am not willing to continue watching if they are going to push this painful and totally irrational extension.

if that was not red john, then the whole show is-was one big fucking waste-enough is enough, they did this same shit with LOST which in my opinion was the worst pathetic piece of garbage ever-Lost was really messed up - that bald headed dude was so weird and loved that island so much they should've shown a scene of him having sex with 'the island' matthew fox is a bumbling idiot as well, Evangeline lilly's first try at acting, she should quit while she's ahead - the mentalist-this show has/had the potential to be just about anything, but if that wasnt red john, who's killing was way overdue anyhow, then all was a complete waste
